Yes Union!

Empowerment

A union gives you a voice and an opportunity to secure workplace respect. AFSCME represents over 20,000 librarians nationwide. AFSCME backs us up, but we run our own union. We, the employees of MCPL, negotiate the contract that empowers us, and we administer our local.

Job Security

A union gives you the power to negotiate a contract, and a contract ensures job security. Indiana’s “at will” laws offer no security, and you can be dismissed at any time for no reason. A union will put us at the table with administration, and we will draw up a contract that requires due process and justification for dismissal. No “at will” dismissals!

Transparency & Consistency

A union works to establish transparency and consistency in hiring and promotion. Say no more to the inconsistency in the handling of job postings and job reclassifications. Say yes to consistent implementation of a defined policy for hiring and promotion. No more favoritism!

Communication

A union establishes direct lines of communication between staff and administration. We should be able to express ourselves and our opinions without fear of repercussions. We should be able to approach the Board when managers and administration fail to handle a problem equitably or follow established policies and procedures.

Get the facts! If you have questions or would like to sign a card of intent, talk or send an email to a member of the union organizing committee. Your name will never be shared with administration—even when the union becomes an MCPL reality.
